Starting Smashkey

When you start Smashkey, the first thing you’ll see is the file selector. From here you can either choose an existing Smashkey file or create a new document. Once you click on an existing file, or click the New Document button, the editor will load up.

Writing area

The writing area is like a typewriter. Unlike traditional word processors, as you type, the text scrolls upwards. Smashkey intentionally displays only the last five lines of text. The sixth line is where you type.

<aside> 💡 There are several intentional constraints designed to help you focus on writing rather than things like formatting and correctness.

Delete is intentionally disabled, but you can turn it on via Tools > Enable Delete

Arrow keys, cut and paste, undo, are also disabled. You can not turn these on.

Linebreaks can be entered with the enter key. However, you can type and the text will automatically wrap.

Status bar

Upon moving your mouse at the bottom of the window, the status bar will appear. It is intentionally hidden for a distraction free experience.
